Opening of the exhibition “Ukrainian Sheriffs. Don’t Lose Your Home” | Art Station “Dubulti”
The exhibition “Ukrainian Sheriffs. Don’t Lose Your Home” offers a strange journey. Strange because the time period separating the footage filmed by film director Roman Bondarchuk from today seems to have stretched since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while space itself has shrunk. According to the astronomical calendar, the events seen on the exhibition screens take place 12–13 years ago; geographically they are localized in Stara Zburivka, which is located approximately 1,300 km in a straight line from Jurmala to the southeast. There are thousands of such villages in Ukraine, but Stara Zburivka is special with its extraordinary solution, born of the spirit of self-organization so characteristic of Ukrainians, in the vacuum of law enforcement. This is also the story of the village chairman Viktor Marunyak and his two appointed “village sheriffs” – Viktor and Volodymyr. The screens at the exhibition show episodes from the sheriffs’ daily routines and village life shortly before and after the occupation of Crimea.
The first units of the Russian occupation army entered Stara Zburyivka on March 17, 2022. A few days later, the Russians captured the village chairman, held him in prison for three weeks, and tortured him. In an incredible way, with the help of close friends, he managed to escape from the occupied zone. After a long journey to Latvia and treatment at the Bulduri hospital, he and his wife moved to live with their daughter in Germany, where he is currently writing a book about the history of Stara Zburyivka. One of the sheriffs, Volodymyr, joined the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces and is still serving in Donbass. The second sheriff, Viktor, after a long hiding, also managed to escape from the occupied territory and find temporary housing in Kherson. There, during another Russian missile attack, he received a concussion, from which he is only now starting to recover.
The exhibition is a project of the 30th anniversary of the documentary film forum “Baltic Sea Docs”. The story of the exhibition is made up of the authors’ unpublished video diaries, materials from the Ukrainian War Archive (Архів Війни, ukrainewararchive.org) and the film “Ukrainian Sheriffs” (2015) by director Roman Bondarchuk.
