ĒRIKA KUMEROVA’S exhibition “SL’OTAS MANIFESTS” | Jurmala Culture Center

The world of painting is vast, diverse and endless. Nowadays, artists paint with brushes, brooms, window cleaning rubbers, sponges, rollers, trowels and even gas burners. There are no limits to the choice of tools, and this time ĒRIKA KUMEROVA came into the hands of a simple broom purchased at the Depo store. The artist predicted that the wide, fine-striped brushstroke would be the right one to help express the dynamics, movement and multi-layeredness she needed on the canvas. And so began the experiments that lasted 9 months: how to tame this broom, how to touch the canvas with it, how strongly and quickly or how smoothly, slowly and easily. It can also be called gestural art, when the author paints with his whole body, not just his hands.

Revealing this unusual technique, E. Kumerova draws attention to the fact that the landscape can be interpreted as barely perceptible, that the human eye and soul perceive abstract color fields and lines in their own unique way. It is enough to say a little in advance, and the viewer's imagination does the rest.

The painter, who is known for both landscapes and abstract works, in her exhibitions, including this one, highlights the richness of color, painterly dexterity, reasonable composition and a sense of lightness. The artist works intuitively, paying great attention to new turns that arise during the painting process. The exhibition includes works created in both oil and acrylic techniques, almost all created in 2025 and 2026.

When observing E. Kumerova's work, there is a special feeling that connects traditions with new, experimental, bold solutions, creating a previously unseen form of expression. SL'OTAS MANIFEST is a call to thinking, feeling and change in the understanding of art.
