Welcome spring in Jūrmala

Leave the New Year’s eve fireworks and champagne behind, spring is the real new beginning! Clear skies, more sun, birdsong, early flowers and warmer air that excites the senses.
This is the most touching season, a time when we emerge from our winter coats like budding leaves. The full gamut of spring can be enjoyed in Jūrmala, where a short stroll is all that separates you from wild nature and conifer forests, Lielupe and the Baltic Sea, flowerbed squares and sunlight-dried cobblestone paths leading to the season’s first few terrace cafés. The harmony of city and nature is Jūrmala’s love story. Come fall in love!

Be there as nature awakens!

After the monotony of winter, we wake up to witness the symphony of spring! Our eyes and our ears are in love with it. Birds tweet out, looking for each other in a choir of different voices. The vibrant green of young leaves, the fragrant clouds of lilac and flowering fruit tree aromas provide a vivid experience. Springtime feelings emerge in nature. The paths winding through Jūrmala forests and marshes offer oneness with mother nature’s rejuvenation, rekindling dormant feelings and sparking new ones. Have a coffee at one of the city’s kiosks or sit down at an outdoor café table in between walks.

Two kilometres of bridgework traverse the Ragakāpa nature park near the mouth of the river Lielupe, providing a glimpse of centuries-old pines, rare plants and – to the most attentive of visitors – even more elusive bird species. The nature trail culminates on the seaside with a great new site for taking a photo – a red wooden boat bearing the words “Jūrmala saviļņo jūtas” (Sail into the sea of love), excellent for climbing into and sailing into the waves of hearts on social networks.

The Ķemeri National Park is home to protected plants and animals, with eight different trails, among them the 3.4 km bridgework around the Ķemeri Marsh and the 3.1 km Lake Sloka nature trail. There is also a bird-watching tower at Lake Sloka.

Waves in the sea, emotions rocking the soul

Waves are a manifestation of physics in the sea, natural magic, and a brilliant metaphor. When the sea of emotions is overflowing, there is no place better than the seaside. The sea’s beating waves are a mirror facing the spring of the heart – hypnotisingly beautiful and moving. Jūrmala’s 24 kilometres of beaches are waiting for lovers of languid walks. The nearby dunes – ever-changing like water under the perennial command of the wind – are a great spot to sit down and relax.

The long beach is dotted with station indicators: the train’s rhythmical hum is the heart of the city, its beats heard all along the coastline. The railway is the best way for tired legs to travel along Jūrmala’s backbone. The other side of Jūrmala’s elongated contour is shaped by the undulating meanders of the river Lielupe, which you may travel within an hour on the New Way river tram departing from the Majori pier. The New Way occasionally travels between Jūrmala and Riga as well, although this journey does take two and a half hours. The ferry resumes its regular route in mid-May.

Elixir of youth for the body and mind

Springtime music is not only to be found in nature. The legendary Dzintari Concert Hall near the seaside hosts regular jazz and classical music concerts, as well as aria nights highlighting famous operas to will inspire new beginnings. The Dubulti Art Station is alive with colour – the only contemporary art gallery in Europe established inside a functioning train station – exhibiting “Džemma Skulme. Saruna ar laiku” (Džemma Skulme. A Conversation with Time). Skulme is the prima donna of Latvian visual arts and a paragon of the youthful spirit. She was prolific for the entirety of her 94-year lifetime, and spent her final years in this world engaged in 3D art and collaborations with distinguished Latvian pop group “Instrumenti”.

A deep breath is Jūrmala’s mantra – the ionised sea air, the forest’s essential oils and the river’s flow have a pacifying, reinvigorating effect. They spur the mind to generate excellent ideas. Beauty experts are of the opinion that our bodies are reborn and undergo a natural cleansing in spring, as does the rest of nature. To help this process along and nourish your winter-battered skin, treat yourself to a spa day. Jūrmala is flourishing on soil rich in mineral springs. For ages, this area has been well-known for its medicinal mud and sulphurous water, bromine and sodium chloride springs have been used for over 180 years in health rejuvenation at numerous sanatoria, remimagined today as modern spas. Most hotels in Jūrmala are spa paradises – the best springtime destination for a new start to one’s mind and body.
