How to Celebrate Easter in Jūrmala? Three Places, Three Experiences

Jūrmala is preparing for Easter and invites visitors to celebrate on 5–6 April across three locations — Majori, the Jūrmala Open-Air Museum, and Kauguri — with a diverse programme combining creativity, culture, and shared festive moments.

In Majori, celebrations will take place along Jomas Street and in Horna Garden, featuring swings, creative workshops, games, and live performances. Alongside Jūrmala’s folk dance groups and folklore ensembles, audiences will enjoy a performance by the Latgalian post-folk group Rikši — one of the most recognisable acts of its kind in Latvia. Their sound blends accordion, violin, bass guitar, mandolin, and drums, creating an energetic and contemporary interpretation of Latvian folk traditions with a distinctive Latgalian spirit.

At the Jūrmala Cultural Centre, a children’s animation programme will present a selection of Latvian animated films — playful, light-hearted, and infused with a springtime mood. Meanwhile, an Easter market will take place at the Majori parking area.

At the Jūrmala Open-Air Museum, the celebration will focus on hands-on and educational experiences. In the Fisherman’s Farmstead, visitors will be able to take part in a birdhouse-making workshop led by ornithologist Valdis Zariņš — particularly relevant in early spring, when birds return and require nesting sites. A ceramics workshop with artist Alda Bitlāce will introduce participants to whistles inspired by traditional forms, reflecting characteristic features of Vidzeme ceramics. The programme will also include egg decorating, traditional Easter swinging, a poultry exhibition, and an exhibition of works by students of the Jūrmala Art School. The highlight will be a symbolic “awakening of birds” ritual with the folklore group Dvīga.

In Kauguri, the programme will combine concerts with family-friendly activities. The post-folk group Daba San will perform original compositions based on Latvian folk song texts, bringing traditional material into a contemporary musical context. The band Pipari will offer a lively and stylistically diverse performance ranging from schlager and rock to pop and reggae, adapting their repertoire to the audience and atmosphere. The programme will also include woodworking workshops, egg rolling, and activities for children.

Three locations, three different ways to celebrate Easter — from lively city events to hands-on cultural experiences and relaxed community gatherings.
