Swimming Season in Jūrmala Officially Opens on 15 May

The official swimming season begins in Jūrmala on 15 May. As every year, the resort town invites visitors to enjoy its unique seaside environment. Historically one of Latvia’s most beloved summer destinations, Jūrmala offers something for every beachgoer—from lively areas with cafés and private lounging zones to quieter spots for a more nature-oriented escape. The city also upholds the long-standing tradition of a designated nudist beach for those seeking a more intimate connection with nature.

The season's opening also marks the full restoration of beach infrastructure along Jūrmala’s 24-kilometre coastline. Benches, changing cabins, waste bins, and wooden walkways are installed, and the Jūrmala Beach Rescue Service resumes its operations.

Water quality is monitored in cooperation with the Health Inspectorate, with regular testing of water cleanliness and temperature. Current temperature data is available at the official tourism website VisitJurmala.lv.

Beach maintenance is carried out daily — marine debris such as seaweed and algae is collected each morning before 8:00 a.m., and the shore zone is loosened. Household waste is collected twice daily across the entire beach area.

If you wish to explore the diversity of Jūrmala’s beaches and find the spot that best matches your mood, we recommend using the Beach Guide. It offers an overview of each beach area's character and atmosphere along the 24-kilometre stretch of coastline, as well as practical information on dining and refreshments, nearby points of interest, the availability of lifeguard stations in specific beach sections, accessibility for wheelchair users, the location of toilets and showers, playgrounds, sports facilities, and both active and quiet relaxation zones.

For family safety, the Beach Rescue Service offers child ID wristbands during hot days. These bracelets, marked with a parent’s contact information, help ensure a quick response if a child gets lost.

Free accessible leisure equipment for visitors with functional disabilities — including tandem bikes, tricycles, floating beach chairs, and sun loungers — is available at the beaches of Kauguri and Jaunķemeri.

On hot days, child ID wristbands with parental contact information are available at beach rescue stations – for a safer seaside experience in Jūrmala.

Rescue stations are located in Bulduri, Majori, and Kauguri.

We encourage every visitor to act responsibly — follow safety and public order rules, respect nature and the peace of others, and help make Jūrmala an even more enjoyable and sustainable destination for all.
