On Dzintari Beach, near the sea access at Turaidas Street, visitors can explore the contemporary environmental artwork “Mare Balticum” by French artist Jean Denant. The artist has created a mirror-map from polished stainless steel that imitates the shimmer of the water's surface, making the object ever-changing, vibrant, and contemplative. In its reflection, one can see the sky, the sea, the sandy shore of Dzintari — and the silhouette of the viewer themselves.
“‘Mare Balticum’ is not simply a geographical representation – it is a symbolic continent without borders. A reflection of the identities that inhabit it – no longer a boundary that separates, but a connecting thread that unites,” the artist explains. The steel surface embodies a shared vision of the future — one of cooperation, environmental sustainability, and the sea as a unifying value.
Jūrmala is the first city where this artwork has been installed. In the future, similar mirror-maps are planned to appear in all eight countries bordering the Baltic Sea, becoming a unifying symbol of art and nature.
“Mare Balticum” was created through international collaboration involving the association MB D79 (France), the French Institute in Latvia, the Jūrmala Municipality, and the Jūrmala Centre for Cultural Space and Environmental Design.
