Jūrmala Farmers’ Markets – Seasonal Flavours by the Sea

During the harvest season, we seek out places to purchase local farmers’ produce – fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and other ingredients for preparing salads and warm meals at home, as well as jams, pickles, or dried goods for the winter. Yet markets are more than shopping venues – they are also places to warm up with a hot drink, meet acquaintances, and enjoy a lively atmosphere. Jūrmala offers several markets and fairs, each with its own character and charm.
The oldest and perhaps the best known is Bulduri Market, operating since 1908. Many remember it from childhood stories as the place to find fresh vegetables, freshly baked bread, and treats for everyday joy. Today, the market retains this historic charm while offering a wide range of local products and refined delicacies. The market cafés also have a special appeal – perfect for a leisurely meal or a cup of coffee in a bustling setting.

In the centre of Kauguri, Līgo Bazaar brings vibrancy – a modern food and delicatessen market where you will find freshly baked bread, local dairy products, meat, fruits, and vegetables for both everyday and festive tables. Tropical fruits, honey, jams, and even Georgian cuisine specialities add a unique flavour to the experience.

With a very different atmosphere, Kauguri Market is the place where locals shop for everyday needs. Here you can find everything that grows, sprouts, is milked, or harvested – from heaps of autumn mushrooms to seasonal berries and herbs. The life of the market is as colourful as its produce: Roma community vendors, friendly prices, and textile stalls with fabrics fluttering in the wind create a special market spirit.

And then there is the Majori Kalnciema Street Market, an initiative of actress Dace Vītola. Small and cosy, it offers a unique market experience – here, customers are greeted by name, the atmosphere feels like a holiday, while the signboard and façade painting recall the history of market life since the early 20th century. This market resembles more of a friendly meeting place, where historic trading traditions blend with today’s atmosphere.
