Jurmala city application for the title "European Capital of Culture 2027"
Jūrmala's application for the competition, the artistic concept and the programme have been developed as a result of cooperation with the involvement of inhabitants, cultural experts and cooperation partners of Jūrmala from the neighbouring municipalities in Kurzeme.
The programme has three thematic directions: health – activities dedicated to physical and mental health; co-creation – events created as a result of local and international cooperation aimed at attaining cultural and economic goals; environment – activities aimed at climate change and sustainable development issues.
The programme of the application includes events of varying scale – from neighbourhood projects to international masterpieces of professional art, from events enjoyed on one's own to a dance with several tens of thousands of participants on the coast of the sea from Jūrmala to Cape Kolka, from knitting mittens to art created by artificial intelligence.
The European Capital of Culture is designated every year since 1985. One Latvian and one Portuguese city will become the European Capitals of Culture in 2027, winners of the title will be announced in 2022.
