For more than two decades, the vocal group Schola Cantorum Riga has been professionally and artistically preaching the repertoire of ancient music, devoting a special role to the Gregorian chorale in its programmes. The artistic director of the ensemble, Guntars Prānis, is an indisputable authority on ancient music, and the collective he founded is one of the pioneers of this musical genre in Latvia. The multi-instrumentalist Ieva Nīmane is also a specialist in the field, with whom the group created the concert program Vox Clara, dedicated to the music of the late Middle Ages. It sheds light on the time when sacred music was still dominated by the Gregorian chorale and at the same time various secular genres flourished, in which improvisation and local musical traditions played a very important role. The emphasis of the program is on the rich and vividly different heritage of the early polyphony of Hamburg, Riga and Lund, as well as Limoges. The beautiful voices of the men will intertwine not only with the unique wheel lyre – which connects the worlds of the Middle Ages and traditional music in an interesting way – but also with the instruments documented in Latvian traditional music – bagpipes and kokle. And the feeling of medieval Riga will be created by the early Latvian language and elements of traditional singing, woven into the programme.

The mass and interludes L'homme armé were written for the five-voice ensemble Ars Antiqua Riga, which is matched by the organ, sackbuts (ancient trombones), and electronic instruments, creating atmospheric sound paintings. The opus was created in a creative symbiosis between composer Uģis Prauliņš and conductor Pēteris Vaickovskis, who initially invited the composer to write musical comments (interludes) about Johannes Ockeghem’s (1414–1497) mass L’homme armé. A creative cooperation provided the opportunity and inspiration to expand the interludes to the mass: “It is a challenge – to include the traditional means of expression and forms of sacred music in the modern surrounding landscapes,” admits Uģis Prauliņš.

The exhibition "Fake Memories" by young Jūrmalas artist Laima Steika is an attempt to draw the viewer into a kind of twilight mood - at dusk, before the street lights come on, when nothing is clearly visible, when the rational and pragmatic recede, the mythical and spiritual come into play. False memories are an interesting phenomenon, when the mind, using imagination, knowledge, and associations, fills in the "gaps" in memories. The smoky watercolors were created in a similar way, allowing the flow of apparent memories and associations.

In “Mugwort's Turn" artist Anna Aizsilniece talks about concepts of freedom and order, and how people strive to seek, create and understand them. At the same time, Anna Aizsilniece develops contemporary eco-conceptualism, which highlights overlooked resources and their use. Art production and its ecosystemic criteria have been the focus of Anna Aizsilniece's attention since 2009 when she created the first clothing collection in the Recycled.lv project.
This time the mugwort - a plant in Latvian meadows - is placed in the center of the exhibition with its plastic, ecological and biological pigment resource. Equally important in the exhibition is the cultural and historical heritage of the mugwort in folk songs and traditional housekeeping. The exhibition offers an opportunity to meet Anna Aizsilniece's unique syncretism, which combines traditional myth and knowledge, conceptual ecology, handicrafts, and pop art charm. The exhibition will feature twelve paintings created by the artist in her original technique - with an extract of fermented mugworts and an admixture of acrylic pigment on wood fiber boards. Instead of brushes - brooms made out of mugworts. On the first floor of the Art Station Dubulti spectator will be able to stand among the mugworts and spin with the sun.

The exhibition of the painter Valdis Bušs "Beginning. 50"

  • 23.July - 22.July
  • Bulduri Exhibition House
  • Muižas ielā 6

The exhibition "Beginning. 50" by the painter Valdis Bušs is dedicated to commemorating the 50th anniversary of the artist's first solo exhibition.

This year we celebrate an important event in the artist's life - fifty years have passed since the first solo exhibition. In the fall of 1972, Valdis Bušs, a man in his mature years (48), exhibited his paintings for the public for the first time and anxiously awaited the opening of the exhibition at the Jurmala Museum of History and Art. The framing of the paintings has also been preserved and restored as it was then, in 1972.
